The recent devastating earthquake in northwest Syria has left an indelible mark on the region, affecting countless families grappling with loss, despair, and the daunting task of rebuilding their lives. Amidst these dire circumstances, WATAN provided essential relief to those in need.
WATAN has dedicated its efforts to addressing the urgent needs of affected families through its innovative Food Voucher Project. This project aims to uplift and empower families, offering comprehensive and continuous support. We had the privilege of speaking with Ahmed Shahin, the project coordinator, who shared insights on the project’s success and impact. Shahin reveals that a staggering 2,060 families, primarily those severely affected by the earthquake, have benefited from the Food Voucher Project. With a monthly value of $65, these electronic vouchers have been distributed over a three-month period, enabling each family to receive a total of $195. By granting families the flexibility to choose from a selection of local stores, their unique dietary and cultural preferences are met, while simultaneously stimulating the local economy. Families like that of Hajja Um Ahmed, a resilient grandmother displaced from the Aleppo countryside shared her heartfelt gratitude for the support, expressing how the vouchers have nourished her family during challenging times. These personal stories remind us of the importance of compassionate action in restoring dignity and rekindling hope. While food remains a critical need, Shahin emphasizes the importance of a holistic approach in humanitarian relief efforts.WATAN understands displaced populations’ dire circumstances, including limited access to clean water, healthcare, and education.WATAN’s work would not be possible without the collaborative efforts of partners, donors, and the tireless dedication of its team members.
