Beyond Survival WATAN's Comprehensive Approach to Meeting Urgent Needs in Syria

The Syrian crisis has brought forth a pressing need for shelter and non-food assistance among affected families. As freezing temperatures threaten the lives of refugees in camps, the demand for projects addressing these needs becomes even more crucial. In this article, we shed light on the efforts of WATAN.

We also include insights from Mustafa Badawi, one of the field team leaders, highlighting the urgency and impact of their work.

The Syrian crisis has exposed families to dire circumstances, necessitating urgent shelter and assistance. Harsh cold weather, heavy rainfall, and ongoing conflicts make it evident that immediate support is indispensable. Syrians residing in tents along the border face exacerbated challenges, as limited employment opportunities further deprive them of essential necessities, including clothing, medicine, and shelter.

WATAN has taken a proactive approach to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in displaced person camps and protect individuals from the harsh winter weather. With unwavering commitment, Mustafa Badawi and the field team leaders ensure prompt delivery of assistance to vulnerable families. Their dedication to addressing urgent needs showcases the organization’s effective response to the crisis.

Throughout May 2023, WATAN’s field teams have successfully reached families in need in the northern Syrian camps. They distributed an impressive total of 5040 non-food aid baskets across over ten camps in Idlib and Aleppo’s countryside. Despite the challenges posed by recent natural disasters, such as earthquakes and severe weather conditions, WATAN’s teams persistently strive to reach families without shelter, ensuring their safety and well-being.

Recognizing that assistance extends beyond shelter, Mustafa emphasizes the critical importance of addressing basic necessities such as food, water, and medical care. WATAN’s relief projects play a pivotal role in meeting these essential requirements, particularly in areas where such materials are scarce. The organization’s understanding of the displaced population’s weak purchasing power, particularly among those recently displaced, further emphasizes the significance of their support.

Mustafa underscores the importance of partnerships with renowned organizations like the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to ensure a coordinated and effective response. Collaborating with such entities enables WATAN to maximize its impact and reach a wider audience, facilitating a more comprehensive approach to addressing the crisis.

In recent months, WATAN has tirelessly worked around the clock, mobilizing all its teams to respond to the needs of affected communities, especially following the devastating earthquake in northwestern Syria. Through collaboration with partners, the organization has succeeded in alleviating some of the suffering by providing crucial relief and support to affected families. As WATAN continues to rebuild lives and communities, its tangible impact on the lives of those affected by the Syrian crisis remains commendable.
